How Much Does a Nanny Cost?

Learn everything that goes into setting an accurate nanny rate.

In the world of childcare, it’s well-known that having a nanny is the most flexible and personalized option out there.

Nannies provide care that supports and accommodates a family's routine and general parenting style. Having a nanny also allows for a child-led environment that encourages children to flourish at their own pace. This level of personalization isn’t possible with other childcare options that have more rigid schedules to accommodate many children’s needs. These factors alone lead many families down the nanny route.

Are you convinced too? Probably.

So, time for the big question

How much does a nanny cost?

The answer: It depends.

A simple Google search will give you a price range wider than the Grand Canyon. It may seem easy enough to pick a rate and run with it, but this isn’t recommended. Starting your search with no reasons or research factored into your chosen rate will only delay finding your ideal nanny. Doing your due diligence and ensuring that your job description and expectations align with the rate you’re offering will attract the right nannies to the opportunity.

To reach an accurate estimate of how much a nanny will cost, here are some important variables to take into consideration:

Location

Do you live in a suburb or a major city? The cost of living varies significantly between the two, directly affecting your nanny rate without throwing in any other factors.

Experience

What level of experience would you like your nanny to have? Do you prefer a nanny who is college educated in childhood development and has six years of career nanny experience, or are you open to a nanny who is transitioning from babysitting to nanny life? Assume that the more experience you expect your nanny to have, the higher the rate.

Number/Age of Children

With multiple children needing care, you should expect to pay a few dollars extra per child. Another factor to take into consideration is the age of the children. Younger children require more hands-on help, such as diaper changes and feeding, versus older/more independent children.

While these components are excellent guidelines to use when choosing an appropriate pay rate for your nanny, many other factors go into setting a realistic price, such as:

  • special skills

  • extra house management duties

  • employee benefits

The list goes on!

It’s important to note that offering competitive rates and benefits will attract serious and qualified applicants to the position. When we see all these factors written out, it can seem overwhelming.
